Weslaco, Texas is centrally located
in the Rio Grande Valley, in the southeastern quarter of
Hidalgo County. Established in 1920 by the W.E. Stewart Land Co., the
city's name was derived from their name.
Weslaco (Population 2000: 26,935) is
a business oriented community, with a good quality of life index,
making it one of the fastest-growing communities in the Valley.
An average annual temperature of
around 77°, coupled with the proximity to the Gulf of Mexico is an
attraction in itself. The
bridge across the Rio Grande to Nuevo Progresso, Mexico, is about 8
miles from downtown Weslaco, making Mexico's shopping and sight-seeing less than ten
minutes away, while
the white sand beaches of
South Padre Island are less than one hour to the east. The 18
hole, championship,
Tierra Santa Golf Club, a
Bicultural Museum, Valley Nature Center, tropical parks, and shopping
(the retail centers of Harlingen and McAllen are in Weslaco) round
out the recreational package.
Weslaco is the home of the
Frontera Audubon Society headquarters
and a
birdwatching Paradise.
There are four Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail sites and three other
excellent year-round birding locations inside the city as well as
the
nearby 2,080 acre
Santa
Ana National Wildlife Refuge.
Weslaco boasts
more birds per square mile and tropical and exotic species seldom seen
anywhere else.
Two
international airports are within 20 minutes of Weslaco, one to the
east and the other to the west, while the
Weslaco Mid-Valley Airport serves corporate as well as private
transportation needs.
Customized training to meet the
needs of new and existing companies is offered by
the
new
South
Texas Community College in
Weslaco. Business between the United States and Mexico is growing,
and Weslaco intends to reap the benefits. Major industries providing
employment in Weslaco are educational, health, and social services
(32.5%).

McAllen Heart Hospital is about 19 miles, the Rio
Grande Regional Hospital is also about 19 miles, as is the Cornerstone
